It was love at first sight during the very first scene in the pilot episode. Villanelle was eating ice cream in an ice cream parlor in Vienna with a terrible brown wig when suddenly she decided to flip over a bowl of ice cream in a child’s face. I can see why Eve Polastri is obsessed with her. Villanelle isn’t your average, boring ass Russian female spy that sports a bobbed wig with a bang in 4 different colors and an assortment of trench coats. She kills with a smile on her face after poisoning people with laced perfumes and deadly hairpins injected with poison, making the legacy of the femme fatale proud and weaponizing her femininity and ingenuity to her advantage. Here’s 10 things I’ve learned from her character thus far:
1. Don’t Take Anything Seriously
Villanelle is the most light hearted assassin I’ve ever seen, I think. Every assignment she’s given is light work and she doesn’t sweat a single thing, if anything she has fun with everything she does because she’s that good at it. There’s never any pressure on her to succeed and survive because her abilities are second nature to her. She’s confident enough in her abilities to flawlessly execute her job that she decides to have fun while she’s at it and make it worthwhile.
This carefree nature of hers also throws people off, especially people that she’s supposed to be afraid of or highly respect. She treats everyone the same and doesn’t hold anyone on a pedestal above her cause it’s just not that deep.
2. Be Free and Fearless, No Matter What
Like Nala, she laughs in the face of danger. She doesn’t fear death either, she welcomes and challenges it. There’s always a look of pure satisfaction and ecstasy on her face whenever she kills someone and looks them in the eye as they take their last breath at her hands. Death is pleasurable for her. Everything is a game to Villanelle despite her profession being so high risk and serious in nature. Even after she slipped up and made some mistakes, allowing Eve to catch on to her, she never backed down once M16 got involved. What is there to fear when you’re a highly skilled assassin who can move through society and assimilate to different identities with ease? Of course her being a bonafide psychopath plays a huge part in her ability to not care about anything deeply, but it pays off where it counts. Her fearless nature allows her to live freely and move through the world as she pleases, not ever feeling emotionally bound to anyone or anything, dead or alive.
3. Life Is A Play, Be An Award Winning Actor
Life is a game to be played but also a play to be acted in. Everyone has a role to fill and a part to play, both in society and their personal lives. Villanelle plays her parts very well when it comes time to infiltrate spaces and act as a spy in order to kill her target. She tailors the roles she plays to get what she wants and to fulfill her needs and it works every time. This ties back to what I wrote about on my homepage about acting and role play being a great coping mechanism for social anxiety. It allows you to interact with others with confidence, casting your anxiety aside and letting your mind focus on more important and enjoyable things.
4. Beauty and Feminine Charm Will Always Reign Supreme
Another reason she’s so good at her job as a contract killer is because she’s a young woman with an innocent, youthful appearance and demeanor. Because of this, people often underestimate her, giving her the upper hand to kill with ease and without anyone suspecting it was her. Not only can you effortlessly assassinate people by highlighting your feminine nature, it’s also easier to get what you want in a world where men have always went to war over and paid for the mere presence of a beautiful woman. Beauty is highly valued and you should use it to your advantage as best you can. The world is your oyster, use your femininity to shuck it open.
5. Never Have Too Much Dip On Your Chip
The whole Russian prison part of season one was wild because Konstantin put her in there under the impression that he would get her out soon so she just started wildin’ out the minute she got there like she was just a visitor. She made her stay there even worse by being a cocky asshole but with her being a psychopath and all, I’m sure she didn’t care that much, especially since she ended up breaking out anyway. But if she hadn’t gotten out, she would’ve been shit outta luck.
Villanelle is great at what she does and she knows it, but somewhere along the way she got messy because she let her confidence fill her head up too much. She became sloppy with her kills and has allowed herself to get caught, which unraveled a whole new world of mess between her and the government agents trying to track her down. There is no such thing as being too good or too cautious when it comes to anything, because anything can happen and set you back. Balancing humility and confidence is a life skill that we should all work towards mastering eventually. It goes a long way.
6. Treat Yourself
Villanelle lives in a beautiful Parisian apartment that every girl dreams of living in one day, with her boudoir filled with expensive perfumes (one fittingly named La Villanelle) and makeup, and her wardrobe overflowing with expensive and stylish designer clothes. She likes nice things and she doesn’t shy away from it, she rewards herself handsomely because she simply deserves it from all her hard work of traveling to kill people everyday.
7. Let Nothing Stand Between You and Your Craft
Being a contract killer, I’m sure Villanelle is paid handsomely for her work. That and the fact that she’s a psychopath makes her job even more fun and worthwhile, because nothing is better than being paid to kill people for someone who basically has no conscience. Whenever she’s given orders, she carries them out and exceeds every time, letting nothing stop her from doing so. Not a wound on the face, not getting hit in the head with a log, nothing.
Her dedication to her work is something that I love, I’m not gonna lie. It’s rare these days to see people who work unsavory and undesirable jobs that still take pride in what they do and carry it out to the best of their ability regardless, simply because that’s the type of person they are and they value putting in effort no matter what.
8. Recognize Who You Are. Embrace It. Then Bask In It.
Like Socrates said, know thyself. Once you know the ins and outs of yourself, the best and worst parts alike, there’s really nothing anyone can say or do to hurt you or catch you off guard. It keeps you ahead of the game and away from the bullshit at all times, yet another great form of self-discipline that can take you far in life. Villanelle is fully aware of the fact that she’s a psychopath and really has no qualms about it, it probably makes life easier for her, being able to remove the emotional part and use that energy for what really matters. She’s also beautiful and she knows it, and it’s one of her main assets that she uses to her advantage as an assassin.
9. Be The Cat, Never The Mouse
This show is supposed to be Eve, the M16 agent, chasing down Villanelle, the assassin, but it quickly turned into being the other way around. In this situation, I would consider Villanelle to be the apex predator and anyone trying to hunt her down and challenge her is fair game to become her prey. Despite the ongoing chase, the agents at M15 still obviously fear Villanelle and her unpredictable nature. She is the prey-turned-predator.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from dating this pitiful generation of men it’s to will never allow yourself to be manipulated and played with, let alone putting yourself in that vulnerable position. I’ll get you before you ever even get close to getting me, and it’ll be fun for me. Putting yourself in a position to be hunted, to be the prey, to be vulnerable to your detriment, to be taken advantage of, is something to avoid at all costs, especially as a woman. Eat or be eaten, those are your two options in this world unfortunately.
Disclaimer: Don’t ever actually chase men in the dating game though, that’s a no-no.
10. Always Do Your Research
Before each assignment, Villanelle does extensive research on each of her victims so she can gauge what kind of person they are, where they’re from, their history, and their current location to execute the perfect murder. You would never get anything done or go anywhere in life if you expect to be spoon-fed everything and perpetually suffer from baby bird syndrome.
She stays 2 steps ahead of everyone by gathering and staying up to date on the intel that she needs to move stealthily and keep herself protected. If there was one word of advice I would give for self-preservation and staying on top, it would be this.
